“Ah, how clear, transparent and ringing
sounds that childlike ‘the sea is thin’!”
In our performance, the phone booth by the beach turns into a magical gateway to an underwater world, where a little girl named Lily sets off to find a magic pearl – the one that makes the heart kind. Along the way she meets the terrifying Hryli, the greedy jellyfish, the cunning clam, the turbot, the octopus, the corals and many other strange creatures of the deep. Each encounter is a trial, each “horror” – a window into courage, compassion, and the ability to tell true goodness from a beautiful deception.
And the greatest magic of all turns out not to be the pearl, but the friendship between a child, a “terrible” fish, and a wrinkled grown-up who, for a brief moment, remembers again what it means to believe.
Based on the poetic text Puk by Valeri Petrov, the performance tells, with plenty of humour, music and tenderness, the story of what it means to grow up – without losing the child within. The tale of Lily, Hryli and the Wrinkled Man is at once a fun sea adventure for children and a wise mirror for adults, who secretly still remember their own summer holidays, first fears, first friendships, and that fragile little “puk” in the heart after which you are never quite the same.
