Puppet Theatre – Plovdiv presents “Hamlet” in Beijing

The international program of Beijing Puppet Art Week, held this year under the motto “Classics and Avant-Garde”, has been officially announced. From October 7 to 21, the Gulou West Theatre and the Experimental Theatre of the Beijing People's Art Theatre will host seven international puppet performances. They will offer artistic encounters between classical works and contemporary interpretations, between tradition and innovation.

Among the selected titles is “Hamlet” by Puppet Theatre – Plovdiv. The performance will be presented on the Chinese stage alongside productions from different countries, making its participation part of a broader cultural dialogue.

This year’s program of Beijing Puppet Art Week, dedicated to “Classics and Avant-Garde”, brings together classical works and modern interpretations. Within this dialogue, the Bulgarian “Hamlet” takes its place among the international productions.

The performance “Hamlet”, created on the text by William Shakespeare and Richard Armour and directed by Sybi Sybev, has been part of the repertoire of Puppet Theatre – Plovdiv for 24 seasons, making it one of the longest-running puppet productions in Bulgaria.

Over the years, the production has been presented at more than 10 international festivals – in Hungary, Romania, the Czech Republic, Poland, Turkey, and other countries – and has received numerous prestigious awards. With its enduring stage life and international recognition, “Hamlet” continues to bring audiences closer to Shakespeare’s classic tragedy through the expressive power of puppet art.
